Special considerations

The Mapbox Cartography Team prides itself on making maps are both usable and beautiful. Our core Mapbox map styles are created largely for general purpose use. The Cartography Team styles almost every map feature and classification using our global Mapbox data, and the maps are ready to plug and play into any mapping app. We also have a few speciality maps we've been working on with specific use cases, conditions, and/or users in mind.

For these kinds of maps use design thinking, we to help ensure that the user experience is prioritized, design execution is optimized for platform and performance, and that the map works in the overall environment it will ultimately live in. Environmental considerations can be anything from the time of day, location of interaction (outside in the sun, inside an office), mode of transportation (car, bike, or foot), the platform being used to view the map (mobile, web, etc.), or even the user interface associated with the map style.

This process helps us build holistic design solutions for our products and the experience of end users. These are the use cases we are developing design processes for:

  • Maps for mobile
  • Maps for navigation
  • Maps for data visualization
