Design principles

Here are some of the core design principles that cartographers and map designers apply as they style their maps. Together these principles form a system for seeing and understanding the relative importance of the content in the map and on the page. Without these, map-based communication will fail. The four design principles we will cover include:

  • Contrast
  • Hierarchy
  • Density
  • Legibility
